At its Oct. 21 meeting Elmhurst SD 205’s Board of Education authorized the assistant superintendent of finance and operations to approve contracts for procuring natural gas and to work with NINIA (Nania/NINIA in the presentation) Energy Advisors to elect pricing terms for periods up to 48 months.
Finance staff said energy prices have risen in recent days and market offers typically require a decision within 24 hours of issuing an RFP. To avoid losing favorable windows, staff asked the board to delegate contract approval authority to the assistant superintendent so staff can lock in acceptable fixed rates and present contract details to the board the following month for ratification.
Board member moved the authorization and the motion passed on a 7–0 vote. During discussion staff described the opportunity as a potential 8% increase over the previous fixed rate with an anticipation that market movement could be as much as a 20% increase if not hedged.
Board members expressed support for using procurement strategies to manage taxpayer funds and district utility costs. The board recorded the motion and the vote in open session.
