Resident urges action on dangerous neighborhood roads; school district invites officials to Dec. 16 celebration

At the public-comment period of the Colleton County Council meeting, resident Felicia Johnson urged the council to address what she described as dangerous driving and excessive posted speeds in her neighborhood, and said state responses have been inadequate.

Johnson said motorists frequently ignore speed limits in a residential area she described as needing a lower posted speed. She said residents, including children and bicyclists, are at risk and said, "45, that's a residential area ... they need to go to 25," adding that she had not received sufficient follow-up from state or federal elected officials and had only received a response from "mister McMasters."

Council leadership responded by acknowledging the concern but noting limits on county authority over state roads. The chair told Johnson staff had shared contact information and that many of the issues she described fall under the South Carolina Department of Transportation's jurisdiction, but said county staff would stay in contact.

Also during public comment, Lynn Stroll spoke on behalf of the Hendersonville community to thank Barry McCroy for his service and invited elected officials to a school celebration on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 5:00 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center. Stroll said the date was changed to avoid a scheduling conflict and urged officials to attend.

The council did not take formal action on the road-safety concerns during the meeting and directed staff to maintain contact with the resident.
