Board decides to leave vacant seat unfilled until regular election, then enters executive session

The district clerk outlined three options: appoint a qualified resident, offer the seat to the third-highest vote-getter from the most recent election, or call a special election. The clerk reviewed steps and timelines under Education Law (as cited in the presentation) and estimated the cost of a special election at about $17,000; petition deadlines and required public notices were also described.
Board members debated representation, voter intent, fiscal prudence and operational impact (including committee membership and quorum risks). Some members argued appointment of a prior vote-getter would honor voters' intent; others said holding a special election for a short unexpired term was not fiscally responsible and would cost taxpayers. After extended discussion the board recorded consensus to leave the seat vacant until the next regular election rather than run a special election or appoint at this time.
Following that decision the board moved and voted to enter executive session to discuss the conduct of a board member under district policy and state education law; the board said no formal action would be taken in executive session.
What happens next: The seat will remain vacant until the regular election cycle; the board will continue committee work and has committed to share past presentations and data with board members when requested.
