Superintendent announces Taylor Farms reading incentive and Wallace Foundation partnership

Superintendent Laura Cortez told the board the district is preparing a memorandum of understanding with Taylor Farms to reward third graders who meet grade‑level reading expectations.

Vice President Smith described the so‑called "golden ticket": Taylor Farms will provide checks, reportedly $250 each, to third graders who read at grade level according to the district’s adopted assessment criteria. Cortez said the district plans assemblies and outreach to first and second graders as part of a multi‑year effort to encourage early reading and intends to roll out awards at the start of next school year. The superintendent noted the initiative will include outreach and supports for English learners as the district seeks to raise proficiency across student groups.

Cortez also announced that Greenfield will participate in a Bright Futures program associated with the Wallace Foundation: Bright Futures was the recipient of a national Wallace Foundation award (the Wallace Foundation’s national portfolio was described as approximately $1.5 million) and selected Greenfield as one of seven districts to receive support to develop sustainable out‑of‑school programs focused on adolescent opportunities.

Board members expressed enthusiasm for the partnerships and for connecting reading incentives with broader after‑school engagement. Superintendent Cortez said staff will work with community partners to shape assemblies, eligibility, and the multi‑year program plan. The district will present details and any required agreements to the board for review.
