The Greenfield Union Elementary School District board approved the first reading of an extensive set of board policy updates on Oct. 9 and directed staff to add a paragraph clarifying employee reporting for Title IX and harassment complaints.
Trustee (mover) brought the motion for first reading of numerous policies; after Vice President Smith pressed to strengthen language for items numbered 22, 23, 25 and 33 the superintendent said legal counsel recommended lifting a paragraph from an earlier policy to make reporting options explicit. Superintendent Laura Cortez said the recommended paragraph instructs employees to report incidents to their direct supervisor, a district administrator or the district’s Title IX coordinator and allows bypassing a supervisor if that person is the subject of the complaint.
The addition is being proposed to ensure staff know the district’s reporting channels and the board treated the item as a first reading so the final text will appear at the next meeting. The board took a roll call vote after the discussion and the transcript records ayes from all members present; the motion carried.
Board members emphasized supporting victims and making clear avenues for help. Vice President Smith said staff need designated supports who can help victims with the reporting process; Cortez and district legal counsel said the added paragraph was intended to preserve investigatory pathways while offering support and referral services through the Title IX coordinator.
Next steps: staff will place the revised policy language on the agenda for a second reading with tracked changes so trustees can see the exact additions before final action.
