The Black Mountain Town Council voted to lower the posted speed limit on South Ridgeway Avenue and Sutton Avenue from 25 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour after a presentation from staff and discussion of safety and enforcement.
Staff said the Active Mobility Commission recommended the change following prior discussions. Council members discussed traffic calming options including speed humps, a speed-box (radar feedback sign), and the need for an education-and-warning period before moving to enforcement. A council member noted that speed limits are effective only if enforced; another member said the town would begin with an education blitz and signage changes before enforcement, following the council’s prior approach to a new stop sign.
A council member (S2) moved to adopt the 20 mph limit for the two streets; the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said signs would be installed as soon as available or ordered, that a public notice would be posted on social media and the town website, and that enforcement would follow an education period.
