Residents urge restoration of Veterans Park disc golf course as council advances park projects

Jen Galloway asked who decided to stop routine mowing and asked the council to "give Public Works the permission to maintain this beautiful space again." Local business owner Sean Pope said restoring the back nine "directly affects the tourism and activity in Black Mountain," linking course upkeep to local retail activity.
The concerns coincided with consent-agenda items the council approved that concern Veterans Park. Staff reviewed a repeal of a prior resolution (identified in the meeting as resolution 25-80) tied to applying for capital grant funding for a combined restroom and concession facility at Veterans Park; the agenda also included a budgeting item to contract Kimley Horn Design Services for concessions and restrooms and a Parks & Recreation Trust Fund pre-engineering application. Council members clarified the immediate Kimley Horn work was scoped to the upstairs/restroom area; staff said downstairs work would require additional permitting and bidding.
Council Member (S6) moved to accept the consent agenda, which passed unanimously. A staff speaker said a meeting was already scheduled with Mr. Galloway to discuss the disc golf concerns and committed to provide an update to the council. Staff also indicated the town will coordinate grant applications and notices related to the Veterans Park restroom and concession project.
What happens next: staff follow-up is planned with the resident who raised the mowing concerns; the council approved the consent items that enable preliminary engineering and grant applications for Veterans Park facilities.
