Planning commission hears gateway‑plan update, code‑enforcement and budget schedule

During open session the South Gate Planning Commission received several staff updates and community requests.
A written commenter asked for an update on the Gateway Specific Plan. Staff said the city is revisiting the gateway plan for the northeast corner of Atlantic and Firestone, is working with the regional Council of Governments and a consultant, and intends to start public outreach and hearings with the planning commission when the consultant work is ready.
Staff also confirmed two year‑end meeting dates (Dec. 2 and Dec. 16) and said management will present budget proposals to commissions on Dec. 2. Staff announced a senior planner will return briefly from paternity leave and then depart the department for another position.
Commissioners pressed staff on better pre‑application outreach — particularly when projects sit near established institutions such as schools — and on how community code‑enforcement concerns are handled. Staff said notices are sent to properties within a 1,000‑foot radius and that many code enforcement complaints are investigated with anonymity preserved; they encouraged residents to file code enforcement reports so staff can follow up.
The meeting concluded with holiday remarks and adjournment at 7:22 p.m.
