The Saline County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 25 approved a routine consent agenda, reappointed the district coroner for a four‑year term beginning Jan. 1, 2026, and set the daily rate charged for Kansas Department of Corrections inmates held in the county jail at $109.33 effective Dec. 1.
The consent agenda included approval of tax roll adjustments, accounts payable, multiple sets of commission minutes, and a Ryan White grant contract for federal fiscal year 2026; commissioners moved and adopted the consent items by voice vote.
Staff presented a resolution and contract to reappoint the district coroner for the 28th Judicial District and recommended continuing contract services with the incumbent for the term 01/01/2026–12/31/2029. The staff presentation noted the coroner program’s 2026 budget for autopsies, transportation and burials at $170,000 and listed annual compensation at $51,719. A commissioner moved to adopt Resolution 25‑24‑40 and the motion carried by voice vote.
The sheriff asked the commission to formalize a previously discussed inmate billing rate for KDOC inmates held locally. "Would it be a motion to approve the rate that I'd recommended of a $109.33 for the DOC inmates that are held in the jail?" the sheriff asked; a commissioner moved, a second was recorded, and the body approved the rate, made effective Dec. 1.
The commission recessed briefly into executive session under the nonelected personnel exemption of the Kansas Open Meetings Act to discuss candidates for the county administrator; commissioners reconvened and reported no action taken.
What’s next: staff will finalize contract signatures tied to the coroner reappointment and the sheriff’s office will implement the newly approved inmate billing rate effective Dec. 1.
