Education committee endorses Draft 3 calendar to present to board, shifting a summer flex day to Dec. 23

District staff presented results from a community calendar survey (about 944 respondents), which indicated a strong preference to start the school year before Labor Day, keep the Friday added to the Labor Day weekend, and avoid half days for working parents. Using that feedback, staff proposed eliminating three half days in favor of a third Act 80 professional-development day to be used for staff learning and targeted parent conferences.
Two calendar drafts were shown: Draft 1 kept the traditional start (Monday before Labor Day) and scheduled the third Act 80 day on March 10 (Eid al-Fitr), with graduation the first Friday in June and the last student day provisionally June 15 (with three built-in inclement weather days). Draft 2 moved the start earlier (August 26) and shortened the student year to June 10. Late in the discussion a third option (Draft 3) emerged: keep the Draft 1 start date but shift Flex Day 1 from August 25 to December 23, giving staff an additional winter break day while maintaining the standard start.
Committee members discussed whether staff preferences justified the shift; curriculum and instruction staff advocated for Draft 3 as a staff-support measure. After discussion the committee supported Draft 3 and agreed to take that single draft to the full board on December 1 for approval consideration.
Staff said they will bring one recommended draft (Draft 3) to the board on December 1 and noted the calendar would include three inclement-weather built-in days and graduation on the first Friday in June.
