During the Oct. 16 meeting commissioners asked staff to reconcile the public art fund after public reporting and internal recollection differed by roughly $60,000.
Commissioner Christine Steiner said staff-provided figures appeared lower than commissioners’ expectations and asked for an audit or review. "There seems to be...something like a $60,000 disparity," Steiner said. Staff liaison Bridget said she would work with the finance department to match records and report back to the commission. Commissioners directed staff to prepare a report and recommended stronger ongoing summaries so balances do not fall out of view.
Separately, commissioners discussed a proposed mural or backdrop for Kent Hall. Commissioner Steiner noted that, by statute, the commission advises City Council on arts matters and urged that the mural be discussed formally so the commission can recommend whether the work should become part of the city’s collection or serve as a decorative backdrop. Chair Smitty West agreed to discuss the scope with the mayor and, if appropriate, agendize the item for a future meeting.
No formal audit vote was taken; staff was asked to investigate and return findings at a future meeting. The commission also asked staff to make printed tour brochures available for Ojai Day and to continue improving communications with local arts organizations.
