Tangipahoa administrators report steady gains in social-emotional learning and expanded supports

District staff told the board that social-emotional learning initiatives (Panorama surveys, Character Strong curriculum, SEL coaches, trauma training and student well-being teams) have increased participation and provided early indications of improved student behavior and classroom climate.
At the Nov. 18 meeting the board received a detailed update on social-emotional learning (SEL) implementation across Tangipahoa Parish schools.
The presentation described four years of work using Panorama survey data, establishment of SEL coach positions after Hurricane Ida, adoption of the Character Strong curriculum in K–12 settings and targeted trauma training for administrators. Presenter Miss Fairchild said schools are using SEL during intervention time and PE periods and that student well-being teams have been launched at high schools.
Participation in Panorama and the district's deep-dive process into discipline data have increased, presenters said, allowing teams to correlate SEL engagement with changes in discipline referrals and academic metrics. Miss Fairchild cited national professional development participation and said, "We had 32 people attend the national conference in Washington for character strong." The presentation included participation-rate figures and described the district's plan to expand parent-facing PDs, EL-night events and parent-advisory committees.
Board members expressed support for the approach and noted the potential for SEL to support student readiness and behavior. Administrators said the program is an ongoing part of the district's culture work and will continue to be evaluated with Panorama and local deep dives.
