The Octorara Area School District Board on Oct. 20 approved the district's list of bills totaling $5,502,647.85, including a general fund payment of $5,466,325.78 and a cafeteria fund payment of $36,322.07.
Board members discussed that charter-school payments are typically higher at the start of the school year and that some entries reflected two payments (August and September) for the same charter provider, which contributed to the larger-than-usual total. "All told, it looked around $1,700,000" for charter payments in September, a board member said during the meeting.
The finance committee reported that, given the ongoing state budget impasse in Harrisburg, the district is positioned to cover payroll and bills through an estimated March or April 2026 if state funding does not arrive. The interim business manager said the district has sufficient capital reserves and is monitoring federal funds tied to food services. The committee discussed options such as opening a line of credit but recommended waiting rather than incurring additional costs.
The board approved the general fund report for the period ending Sept. 30, 2025, and moved the bills by voice vote. The meeting record did not include an itemized roll-call tally for the vote.
Administration said it will continue to monitor state and federal developments and return to the board with updates as needed. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Nov. 17, 2025.
