Board approves employee-handbook changes tied to Paid Family Leave; six policies given first reading

The Monticello school board approved two amendments to the employee handbook at its Dec. 1 meeting to align district procedures with the Minnesota Paid Family Leave Act, which takes effect Jan. 1. The amendments formalize leave procedures and clarify absence-notification steps for staff.

Director of Human Resources Rob Daneker said Minnesota School Boards Association recommended including Paid Family Leave language in the handbook. He described the two amendments: one to incorporate the new state-paid-leave process and a second to clarify that employees expecting to be gone more than two consecutive days must notify their supervisor and consult Human Resources regarding formal leave applications. "Anytime an employee is expecting to be gone more than 2 consecutive days... they, notify their supervisor, and then also... consult the Department of Human Resources regarding any formal leave applications," Daneker said.

The board moved and approved the handbook amendments by voice vote, recorded as passing 4-0. The board also conducted first readings of six policies—606.5 (textbook selection/reconsideration), 611 (homeschooling), 901 (community education), 612.1 (parent and family engagement for Title I), 902 (use of facilities and equipment), and 903 (visitors to district buildings)—as part of its multi-year review cycle; these policies will return for action at a subsequent meeting.

Board members praised committee work on the review schedule and thanked staff for the preparation; no substantive changes to the policies were adopted tonight beyond the handbook amendments.
