Board approves $70,040 turf services contract after members press for soil testing and phased work

The Timberlane Regional School District board voted to approve a three-year contract with Specialized Turf Services to provide core aeration, seeding and top-dressing for the main campus athletic fields in the total amount of $70,040.

The motion, made by Mark and seconded by Alyssa, followed extended discussion about timing and scope. Jack, who had contacted multiple vendors and local groundskeepers, emphasized routine soil testing and argued that November seeding is late and often yields poor germination. He told the board "the first thing you've gotta do is test the soil" and said testing is inexpensive and should inform fertilization and seeding decisions.

Board members debated whether the RFP specification—written to complete work quickly in a day or two—limited competition and whether the district should instead phase applications over a week to reduce turf stress. Several trustees suggested administration explore renting or purchasing equipment (a top dresser or aerator) for the district or sharing equipment among member towns to reduce long-term costs.

Facilities staff said the last soil tests were performed in 2021 and that there were "no major red flags" then; administration committed to scheduling updated testing this fall or next spring depending on vendor availability and to provide the soil results to inform fertilization and seeding decisions.

After discussion the board voted to accept the contract. Board members asked administration to report back on alternatives (renting equipment, staff time impacts) as part of future grounds planning.
