Rensselaer County Legislature tables First Amendment resolution after public opposition

The Rensselaer County Legislature voted 11–8 to table Resolution P41425, a measure described in the agenda as affirming support for the U.S. Constitution and the First Amendment, after public testimony and an on-floor amendment effort.

Reverend Victor Patterson, speaking during the public-comment period, urged legislators to oppose the measure as written and said the resolution “uses the language of liberty to lift up the name of Charlie Kirk,” arguing that Kirk’s public statements “demean, divide, and disrespect communities like mine.” Patterson identified himself as a pastor and a veteran and said free speech carries responsibilities. Legislator Grama proposed an amendment on the floor intended to broaden and make the language more bipartisan; the amendment was seconded but did not reach a final vote because a motion to table prevailed. The motion to table was adopted on a roll call of 11 in favor and 8 opposed.

Legislator Grama told colleagues he sought language changes to make the resolution “more bipartisan” and inclusive of those who have “made the ultimate sacrifice” in defense of democracy. After the tabling vote, Legislator Gendron spoke at length defending the referenced figure as a preacher of traditional values and contrasted that view with the criticism offered during public comment.

The chair said the proposed amendment and the resolution will be reviewed further. The record does not show that the Legislature took a final vote on the amended text; the body formally tabled P41425, which effectively pauses consideration until it is taken off the table at a future meeting.
