On Oct. 22, 2025, the Hartford Public Works, Parks, Recreation & Environment Committee voted to send to the full City Council a mayoral resolution confirming the appointment of Dawn Merritt to the Hartford Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission.
Dawn Merritt introduced herself to the committee, describing her background as a recent transplant and volunteer steward: "I was a community resident, part of that community, and I look to be and I I feel that I am part of this community also." She told the committee she knows the parks well and said, "I'm in the parks every day, 3 times a day," as an example of her frequent engagement with city green space.
Council members welcomed her appointment. Councilman John Gale praised her passion and told Merritt to contact the council if the commission needs assistance advancing its agenda. Councilman Alex Thomas also complimented Merritt’s understanding of parks and expressed support for her service on the commission.
Councilman Alex Thomas moved that the committee send the appointment resolution to the full Council with a favorable recommendation; Councilman John Gale seconded the motion and the committee approved it. The measure now goes to the full Council for final confirmation.
