Council hears request for $250,000 supplemental appropriation to complete Foster Branch dredging

The county said estimates exceeded the earlier $500,000 appropriation and that dredging requires a single, complete operation scheduled to finish by mid‑February next year.
County representatives said the supplemental appropriation would be split evenly: $125,000 county funds and $125,000 in state waterway improvement funds. Staff noted the county had received fines and other cost recoveries related to prior work in the area and expects the requested amount will complete the project.
Public commenters from the Foster Branch and Days Cove communities supported the appropriation. Bill Temic described sedimentation creating new sandbars and shallower channels, and Jeff Beck referenced a 2013 county watershed action plan and prior restoration work in the watershed.
Council will consider the appropriation and related capital program changes (resolution 39‑25) at a future meeting.
