Committee recommends extension of Prince George's County universal design for housing implementation date to July 1, 2026

The Prince George's County Council's Committee of the Whole recommended favorable action on CR141 Nov. 18, a resolution extending the implementation date for the county's universal design for housing law.
Miss Hightower told the committee the resolution extends the implementation date from Jan. 1, 2026, to July 1, 2026, and that a budget and policy fiscal note concluded the resolution will not have a direct fiscal impact. "The resolution will not have a direct fiscal impact, supporting aging in place," Hightower said. She also said the office of law found the resolution to be in proper legislative form.
Councilman Hyde moved the favorable recommendation and Councilman Hawkins seconded. The roll call vote carried 10-0. The committee's action recommends the date extension to give additional time for implementation steps tied to the county's code and zoning ordinance provisions for universal design.
The extension delays the formal implementation date by six months; any administrative or regulatory steps needed to enact the provisions remain subject to subsequent county processes.
