Prince George's County committee backs FY26 school construction priorities; sends Draft 2b to next step

The Prince George's County Council's Committee of the Whole voted unanimously Nov. 18 to recommend Draft 2b of the FY26 joint capital improvement priorities letter to the Interagency Commission on School Construction.
Sheila Jackson, director of capital programs for Prince George's County Public Schools, told the committee the draft updates several previously approved projects that are mostly in construction and adds five projects—primarily systemic replacements for windows and doors—to ensure the county has a sufficient slate of eligible projects for prospective state funding. "We don't wanna be in a position where Prince George's County didn't submit enough eligible state projects and that money went to another LEA," Jackson said.
Jackson also noted the master plan and capital improvement program already list a new southern area elementary school and that the county is signaling early planning for a southern area middle school. Jackson said the added projects follow the county's priority order for systemic replacement and were added because there may be more state funding available.
Council member Harrison moved the committee recommendation and Council member Watson seconded. The clerk conducted a roll call; the motion carried, 10-0. During the discussion a council member asked about the priority of New Northern for District 2 and how important that project is for that district.
The committee recommendation sends Draft 2b forward for the next procedural steps in the capital improvement plan process and for consideration by the Interagency Commission on School Construction. The letter represents county and school-system priorities for state funding; final project inclusion and funding remain subject to the IAC and subsequent CIP processes.
