Council bans stopping or parking in county bike lanes to improve safety

Prince George's County moved to strengthen protections for people who bike and walk by enacting CB 71 on Nov. 17, 2025, which prohibits stopping, standing or parking motor vehicles in dedicated bike lanes and bikeways, subject to enumerated exceptions.
Diane Harris, a Fort Washington resident and longtime cyclist, told the council that blocked bike lanes force cyclists into traffic lanes where drivers do not expect them. "Bike lane is blocked by someone who is using the lane as a loading or parking zone," Harris said, and she urged passage to make already-funded bike infrastructure safer.
Kelly Krombos of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association framed the measure as a common-sense safety step consistent with the county's Vision Zero commitment and cited recent county and regional pedestrian and bicyclist fatality figures, including 91 traffic fatalities in Prince George's County through Nov. 10.
After public testimony the council moved favorable and enacted the ordinance; the vote carried 9-0. Council members thanked advocates and said the law will support safer routes for everyday cyclists, children and less-confident riders.
