County Council unanimously confirms Jonathan Butler as housing director

Jonathan Butler was unanimously confirmed Nov. 18 by the Prince George's County Council as director of the Department of Housing and Community Development.

The County Executive recommended Butler to the full council, saying he "possesses the exceptional skills and experience we need to lead our county's effort in housing and development." Butler told members he considered it "an honor to be before you this morning seeking confirmation" and outlined priorities including production and preservation of affordable units, homebuying assistance and stronger fiscal support for rehabilitation programs.

Butler told the council he has been working in regional public-sector housing operations for roughly two decades and described his office's focus as bringing together public, private and nonprofit partners to deliver housing projects. Supporters from the development and business community described prior collaborations and urged confirmation. Several speakers said Butler has guided projects during difficult periods and promoted partnerships with local housing authorities and redevelopment bodies.

The council moved to confirm the nomination; the clerk recorded a roll call and announced the motion carried unanimously. With Butler confirmed, the DHCD is positioned to proceed on a portfolio of projects and on implementation steps the nominee outlined, including expanded homeowner assistance and measures to preserve affordable units.

Council members and public supporters said they expect Butler to prioritize interagency coordination and to pursue measurable increases in housing supply and preservation. The council recorded the confirmation as a final action on the appointment for the day.
