Sykesville's police chief reported lower incident counts at the Nov. 24 council meeting and highlighted a recent investigation that produced guilty pleas.
Chief of Police Andre Vu summarized public safety data for Nov. 3–16, saying the department recorded 370 total events and only two incident reports during that period. "Incident reports are down this year significantly compared to prior years," Vu said, adding that current totals are "the lowest in the last nine years." He cited 337 incident reports in 2017 and said year-to-date figures were roughly 176 at the time of his report.
Vu noted reduced calls at Birch Manor, reporting six calls this year compared with 39 in 2019. He said Sergeant Lacey has been tracking the location-specific activity and that the department is developing maps and visualizations to show where assists and outside calls occur.
On a recent burglary case, the chief said investigators obtained guilty pleas: the principal defendant received an aggregate term described in the meeting as 15 years with five years to serve and other portions suspended; the secondary defendant received a 10-year sentence, also with portions suspended, and was expected to testify against the principal. Vu described the prosecutions as the product of investigative follow-through and coordination with prosecutors.
The police department also reminded residents that its Toys for Tots donation box is in the lobby through Dec. 12 and that the department has partnered with HT Laney to manage collections and distribution.
