Councilman Schofield told the Town of Sykesville mayor and council on Nov. 10 that he will resign effective Nov. 16 after accepting a position in Manhattan with a nonprofit focused on preventing homelessness.
Schofield, speaking to the council, reflected on more than a decade of community involvement, his work on the planning commission and council, and noted he recently retired from federal service on Oct. 31. "It has been one of the greatest privileges to be a part of that progress," he said, thanking residents, volunteers and municipal staff.
Mayor (Speaker 1) and several councilmembers offered public thanks and goodwill. Councilmembers described Schofield’s contributions to local planning and civic engagement, and one member said they would miss his persistent questions.
The council did not take a formal vote on the vacancy process during the Nov. 10 meeting; Mayor (Speaker 1) said the council would discuss the process for filling the seat at the next meeting. Schofield’s resignation is effective Nov. 16 and the council indicated follow-up on procedural steps will appear on a future agenda.
This was the council’s public announcement of a mid-month departure; the council did not provide additional details about a special election or appointment timeline at the meeting.
