Panel designates Edgewood Center as youth evaluation and treatment facility under California law

The Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee on June 4 adopted a resolution designating Edgewood Center for Children and Families as an evaluation and treatment facility under California Welfare and Institutions Code section 5151 for young people ages 5 to 17, and authorized the Director of Behavioral Health Services to enter into a designation agreement with the facility.
Jo Robinson of the Department of Public Health told the committee that previously raised concerns—chiefly unresolved union matters—have been resolved. Robinson said staff remained available to answer additional questions and described coordination between the department and Edgewood.
Supervisor David Campos thanked Department of Public Health staff and Edgewood for their work and emphasized that worker input was a critical element of a successful program. Supervisor Christiansen said some issues remain open and urged continued attention and pressure to resolve them to ensure the facility serves patients and workers well.
Department staff members Lisonbee Lusby and Colleen Chow were recognized for providing background on the stabilization unit and the facility. There was no public comment on the item. The resolution was moved and seconded and adopted without objection.
The committee’s approval authorizes the behavioral health director to execute a designation agreement with Edgewood; additional administrative steps required under state law and local procedures remain.
