SFUSD board unanimously approves five-year renewal for Leadership High School after public endorsements

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously on Feb. 14 to grant the renewal petition for Leadership High School, extending the charter beyond its June 30, 2012 expiration.

Mike Davis, director of the Office of Equity and Charter Schools, read the superintendent's recommendation and described the district's review process, citing California Education Code section 47607 as the governing statute for charter renewal reviews.

Dozens of public speakers—including alumni, parents and current students—testified in support of the renewal. Kathleen Large, speaking as an English teacher, said Leadership had become "an excellent school" and credited the school with helping students transform their academic trajectories. Several students who described their positive personal experiences urged the board to renew the charter so younger cohorts can benefit.

Commissioners who visited Leadership reported direct observations that aligned with public testimony: they described portfolio defenses, high expectations in AP-level coursework, sustained advising structures and a high rate of college-bound graduates. Commissioner Morase moved the recommendation to grant the renewal; the board adopted the measure by roll-call vote, recorded as seven ayes, and approved the renewal.

The board recorded its action after hearing staff presentation, public comment and board discussion. No amendments or conditions were announced at the meeting.

The renewal follows the district's standard review practices and will be implemented under the timelines required by state law.
