Committee advances landmark designation for 350 University Street

Shannon Ferguson of the Planning Department presented the staff report, describing the building—s colonial revival symmetry and surviving principal interior spaces and noting that the Historic Preservation Commission unanimously recommended designation after a site visit on Aug. 5, 2015. Ferguson told the committee there was "no known public opposition" recorded in the staff materials and that the property owner had not stated a position.
During public comment, Bill Yalda told the committee he had collected a petition signed by 222 neighborhood residents supporting preservation and gave a brief history of the property, saying the structure dated to 1884 and was intended as assisted living for older residents. Another commentator, Ronald, urged the city to value older residents and thanked supervisors for preservation efforts.
Supervisor Scott Wiener moved to forward the item to the full board with a positive recommendation; Chair Malia Cohen and Supervisor Jane Kim voiced support and the motion passed unanimously. The clerk said items acted on at the committee will appear on the Nov. 3 Board of Supervisors agenda.
Next step: the ordinance will be heard by the full Board of Supervisors for final consideration.
