Supervisors hear bridge and road maintenance plans, potential diesel emissions grant

County road staff updated the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors on a series of planned maintenance projects and potential grant funding for equipment.
Speaker 3 said the county solicited quotes for pile replacement on the north side of a bridge on Hickory (Highway 16) and contracted with Iowa Bridge and Culvert to start work Sept. 22. The approach work for a nearby Farmington-area bridge will follow; the pile replacement is intended to restore the structure's weight rating without full bridge replacement.
On regrades and culvert lining, Speaker 3 listed immediate work on Eagle Drive (from Davids County into Douds), Timber Avenue and the River Road between Bonaparte and Farmington, and said crews hope to finish several culvert linings this week. He noted the county employs lime to stiffen bases on some roads and that lessons learned from other counties are useful.
Speaker 3 also raised a possible Diesel Emissions Reduction Act grant that could reopen later this year; a similar county that applied received about $60,000 toward a replacement snowplow truck, which could fund a FY27 purchase and delivery around October 2026 if awarded.
The board heard that the Camp Dodge bridge approach project finished ahead of schedule and that quarry operations include sedimentation basins and erosion-control practices to contain lime and limit runoff into nearby waterways.
No formal action was taken; the updates were informational and flagged for budget and scheduling follow-up.
