Moore County Schools transportation officials briefed the board on Sept. 2 about the activity-bus replacement plan and recommended awarding the purchase to the lowest responsive bidder, White's, at $153,213.
Staff outlined the replacement fund strategy: an annual allocation of $170,000 from indirect cost revenue is set aside to purchase replacement activity buses and to maintain a small reserve for major repairs. The district reported $210,421 accrued in the activity-bus fund, leaving an estimated residual balance of roughly $57,208 following the recommended purchase.
Transportation staff said a new bus will be delivered by October and will be placed at Pine Crest High School; a currently assigned vehicle will be shifted to Southern Middle School to provide activity-bus coverage. Board members asked questions about expected service life for reassigned buses (estimates: roughly another 10 years for a middle-school duty), and staff described recent improvements to routing software and vehicle monitoring that assisted response to a recent accident and helped raise ridership.
The board did not take a final contract award vote at the work session but acknowledged staff's recommendation and confirmed the intent to include the purchase on the upcoming agenda for formal action.
