Commissioners approve transit, capital and community grants and back Operation Greenlight

Transit staff presented four transit-related grant items: a routine 53.11 allocation, a 53.10 operating grant request of $300,000 (with $150,000 proposed local match from transit and Medicaid funds), a capital grant totaling $167,532 with a $16,754 county match to replace a cutaway vehicle and purchase desktop equipment, and a $200,000 50/50 concept grant to support the WNC Express regional route to Asheville. No members of the public spoke on those items; motions to approve each grant were moved and seconded and each passed by voice vote recorded as 5–0.
The board also approved community funding pool awards totaling $37,000: $10,000 to Kids Place, $10,000 to REACH (appearing at the meeting), $10,000 to Macon Medical Assistance Program, and $7,000 to Read to Me. Commissioners debated whether to fund a Highlands swim team application (a 501(c)(3) sports team) and discussed the county’s role in funding nonprofits; commissioners agreed to proceed with the recommended awards to meet earlier applicant expectations.
On the consent agenda, Commissioners approved a resolution to support Operation Greenlight — a county encouragement for residents and businesses to display green lights Nov. 4–11 to honor veterans. The motion to approve the full consent agenda, including the Operation Greenlight resolution, carried unanimously.
