Fire marshal highlights community outreach program as inspectors retire and succession begins

Fire Marshal Ken Coughlin briefed the Fire Commission on the Bureau of Fire Prevention's Community Outreach and Education (COE) program on June 28 and acknowledged long-serving Inspector Tomi Kato, who is retiring at month'end.
Coughlin introduced COE and Inspector Kato, who described the program's origins after the Mission District fires in 2015 and its core workshop, "Fire Safety in the Home." Kato said the bureau added a van and mobile equipment in 2018, expanded partnerships with the Department of Building Inspection and community groups, produced over 20 safety videos for SFgovTV during the pandemic and launched virtual workshops.
Inspector Jenny Mendoza outlined plans to expand outreach to residential care facilities and property managers, and Coughlin noted a new educational memorandum of understanding with City College to broaden training for fire officers and recruit candidates. Commissioners praised Kato's 27 years of service and commended COE's role in prevention and recruitment.
No public comment or vote accompanied the presentation; COE staffing and succession were presented for commission awareness and record.
