Board approves minutes, financial reports, multiple hires, contracts and grants; custodian hire passes 3–1
Summary
At its Aug. 13 meeting the Canfield Board of Education approved the July 9 minutes, treasurer's year-end reports, multiple personnel actions, two labor contracts, grant applications and donations. A motion to hire Matt Bratcher as head custodian passed 3–1 (DeMilo opposed).
The Canfield Board of Education on Aug. 13 approved a slate of routine and substantive items by roll-call votes.
Minutes and finance
The board approved minutes of its July 9 regular meeting and the treasurer's year-end cash summary for FY24–25. The treasurer reported a general fund balance of $13,100,000, transfers of $4,000,000 to the Capital Projects Fund and $550,000 to cover paving in the PI fund, and approximately $78,000 interest for the month. Both votes passed on roll call with affirmative responses from Campbell, DeCaprio, DeMilo and Atway.
Personnel, contracts and field trips
The board approved multiple personnel actions, including licensed and classified resignations and recommended hires (tutors, paraprofessionals and daily substitutes) and extracurricular appointments as presented in exhibits 1–5. The board approved hiring Matt Bratcher as CH Campbell head custodian effective Aug. 1 at $21 per hour; the custodian hire passed on a 3–1 roll-call vote with board member DeMilo recorded as 'No' and the others recorded as 'Yes.'
The board ratified a three-year contract with the Canfield Teamsters Union Local 377 (term cited as July 2025–June 2028) and ratified a three-year agreement with the Canfield School Bus Driver Association (OEA/NEA) for Sept. 2025–Aug. 2028. The board also approved out-of-state overnight field-trip requests for the girls varsity golf team and authorized grant program applications for fiscal year 2026.
Donations
Board members accepted donations totaling $18,215.42 for the month, including $8,036.70 from the Canfield PTA for a Hilltop poster printer and a $10,000 donation to the CHS principal's fund from Faisal and Faisal Bajwa.
Adjournment
The board added an 'old business' segment to future agendas to accommodate public follow-up and then adjourned. No contested legal or budgetary actions were deferred for later votes.
