Canfield coach urges board to support hockey program after state bill expands eligibility

Josh Cangellio, a Canfield High School varsity hockey coach, addressed the Canfield Board of Education during public comment on Aug. 13 to discuss a state-level change that allows players from outside their home districts to participate on school teams. Cangellio said the amendment "specifically included hockey," and that district athletic directors and superintendents across the state had been notified.
Cangellio described the recent roster history: "In the last couple years, our program has only had anywhere from 15 to 17 players," and said without the rule change the program risked not fielding a viable roster in coming seasons. He emphasized that Canfield students would remain the program's focus, proposed invitation-only tryouts for outside players and said attendance and conduct expectations would be identical for all players.
On budgetary matters he said any additional costs associated with out-of-district players should be "accounted for and fully budgeted through our booster program," and the coaching staff would adhere to standards set by the school and governing bodies such as the OHSAA. The board thanked him for his remarks and indicated no decision would be made that night; the superintendent said athletic director Bob Beam and the administration would review the proposal and provide follow-up.
