The Erie City School District board on June 18 approved a supplemental personnel item to add a chief accountability officer and received operational updates on safety screening, electric buses and cell-phone discipline data.
Doctor Gibbs summarized the hire process: "It was posted for 2 weeks. We had approximately 20 candidates, very highly qualified individuals that across 5 states...we did land on an external candidate that is coming from outside of the state of Georgia." Board discussion praised the recruiting process and the candidate's fit; the supplemental item was moved by Doctor Brennaman and seconded by Linda Graff and approved by roll call.
Administrators presented clear-bag screening metrics for Erie High, saying the fully implemented clear-bag policy corresponded with a marked increase in the number of students processed through morning screening between 8:00 and 8:50 a.m. They also provided Infinite Campus discipline entries showing 3,641 classroom cell-phone violation "events" for the year, with 1,809 at Erie High. Presenters explained these "events" represent individual classroom incidents (roughly one event per student-day given school population) rather than a count of unique students.
On transportation, district staff reported electric buses and chargers have been purchased; contractors have received charging stations and a walkthrough of the service center is planned, with the district expecting to begin taking possession and launch the program sometime in November, contingent on delivery and infrastructure work. On Edison construction, contractors will begin infrastructure work and district officials estimated completion between early November and December depending on energization of power.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the definition of cell-phone violations and the consistency of recording events; administration said they will refine recording and consider policy adjustments within Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS).
Next steps include onboarding for the new chief accountability officer and follow-up monitoring of electric-bus delivery timelines and cell-phone enforcement reporting.
