The Walton County Development Review Board approved a scenic-corridor deviation application from Walmart Stores East LP to alter several building-mounted signs at its US 98 store. The changes include relocating the curbside pickup sign to the building edge nearest the pickup area, replacing the previous 'market and home' panel with a larger 'grocery and home' sign centered over the main entrance, and adding small liquor and pharmacy signs above their respective entrances.
Mark Branchley, the applicant’s representative, said the updates reflect Walmart’s evolving branding and wayfinding needs: "they have determined that the pickup sign needed to be over to where the pickup area is likely and is designed to be." Branchley also told the board the total approved sign area under prior approvals remains comparable to earlier final orders; the proposed configuration reduces some brand panels while adding two small wayfinding signs.
Board discussion focused on visibility, illumination and precedent; staff noted prior deviations and asked members to weigh those earlier approvals. The applicant confirmed that only the pickup sign and major brand panels will be illuminated; pharmacy and liquor signs will be non-illuminated. A motion to approve the deviations as presented passed without public comment.
Next steps: applicant may proceed with building sign permits consistent with the approved deviations.
