Council designates two historic houses and authorizes Mills Act conditions

1855 Verdugo Knolls Drive (the 'McBride House'): staff described the 1923 Tudor revival/storybook house’s distinctive, whimsical features — irregular rooflines, leaded and stained glass, varied casement windows and exposed brick detailing — and said the property has high historic integrity. The Historic Preservation Commission recommended designation and asked for two Mills Act conditions: replacing a non‑historic garage door with a compatibly styled wood door and removing a gate portion that does not match the original.
1502 Royal Boulevard: staff presented the Colonial Revival house (built 1965) designed by Gerard Colcord, a regionally notable architect. The property’s composition and garden features drew HPC support; the commission recommended conditions to restore altered windows and return the garage to its original appearance as part of any Mills Act contract.
Members of the Glendale Historical Society spoke in favor of both nominations and noted the society’s tours and online map of historic resources. Councilmembers recognized the architectural value of both houses and voted to approve the designations and Mills Act authorizations.
Next steps: staff to execute Mills Act contracts with the conditions described and coordinate restoration timing with the property owners.
