The Paso Robles City Council convened a special meeting Sept. 6 and went into closed session to receive legal briefings on multiple lawsuits and potential litigation, City Attorney Elizabeth Hall said.
Hall told the council the closed-session agenda included conference with legal counsel on existing litigation under Government Code Section 54956.9(d)(1), citing ‘‘The Tribune v. City of Paso Robles and Chris Bausch,’’ along with cross-complaints by and against Chris Bausch. The agenda also listed anticipated litigation under Government Code Section 54956.9(d)(2) (two cases listed, with only one to be discussed) and initiation of litigation under Government Code Section 54956.9(d)(4) (one case).
During the public-comment period before the council recessed for closed session, Danette DeAugustin urged a speedy resolution: “I just hope we get this thing settled and done and over with,” she said.
After reconvening, Hall reported that the council had discussed the existing-litigation items and the anticipated-litigation matter and that there was no reportable action from those discussions. She also reported that counsel chose not to discuss the initiation-of-litigation item during closed session.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn that was seconded (the second was recorded as by Council member Beal) and approved by vocal ‘‘ayes’’; individual roll-call votes were not recorded in the transcript. The council did not take any public action related to the litigation during the open session report-out.
The council meeting opened with roll call showing Council members Chris Bausch, Beal, Gregory and Strong present; Mayor Hammond participated via teleconference from 3450 Tina Avenue in Missoula, Montana. City staff on the record included City Clerk Melissa Martin, Deputy City Clerk Mary Sponholtz, IT technician Karen Jackson and City Manager Chris Huot.
No dates, settlements, monetary amounts or further procedural steps were disclosed in the public report-out.
