Bill would make district‑level hunting and harvest data public in one‑click format, proponents say

Representative Shannon Maness told the committee House Bill 175 would require Fish, Wildlife & Parks to compile and publish annual district‑level hunting and harvest data in a single, easily accessible spreadsheet. Maness said the data already exist in FWP phone‑survey and license databases; HB 175 would standardize presentation so hunters and the public can readily compare regions and plan trips.

Proponents including conservation groups and hunting organizations said easier public access to existing data would improve management decisions, public input and hunter planning. Ben Lamb of the Montana Conservation Society and others said improved transparency helps managers and the public see where pressure is concentrated and better target outreach and regulations. FWP's Quentin Kudjula appeared as an informational witness and said the department could provide assistance and stand for questions.

The committee closed the hearing on HB 175; sponsors said the bill originated in the House and had broad support. No final committee action was recorded in this session; the committee lost quorum and adjourned later in the meeting.
