Albany utility board approves nearly $290,000 in equipment contracts for fleet, water and wastewater

Staff said the purchases are routine replacements and repairs for aging infrastructure. Fleet requested $86,012.72 to replace two high‑speed diesel dispensers, two regular diesel dispensers and three twin dispensers at city sites; staff said the work will be performed by Barber Equipment of Albany and the units carry a one‑year manufacturer’s warranty. "Work will be performed by a local vendor, Barber Equipment of Albany," a fleet presenter said.
At the wastewater plant, the board approved a $44,710 purchase of a Benshaw‑series soft starter for blower No. 3. ESG, the plant’s maintenance contractor, recommended the unit and staff noted the product carries a three‑year warranty. "This product also carries an exclusive three‑year warranty," an ESG representative said.
Water department work included a $46,930 contract with Donald Smith Company of Headland, Alabama, to replace the pump at Well 13 after an inspection determined the existing unit could not be rebuilt. Staff described the work as critical to maintain downtown and hospital service areas.
The board also approved a $58,683.92 repair of a large pump at the wastewater treatment plant through Waco Electric Supply; staff said replacement would cost roughly $200,000 and the repair should extend the unit’s useful life by four to five years.
Finally, fleet requested and the board approved forwarding to the city commission a $53,276.81 procurement of a 6‑inch Godwin trailer pump from Xylem Dewatering Solutions under a Florida Sheriffs Association cooperative contract. Staff said cooperative contracts expedite purchases and help standardize parts and training across the fleet.
Each item was approved by roll call. Staff said the purchases are part of planned replacements and maintenance work to reduce downtime and avoid more costly emergency replacements.
Next steps vary by item: vendors will schedule installations or repairs and staff will bring any city‑commission recommendations forward as required.
