At Monday’s meeting the mayor and council read a proclamation recognizing alumni of Lemon Street Grammar (later Lemon Street Elementary) and the Marietta City School System for their contributions to educating African American students and for efforts to restore the historic school site.
The proclamation noted that Lemon Street opened in 1894; following later deterioration, a brick school building was completed in 1951 (the proclamation listed the construction cost as $150,000). It recorded that the site later served as a community center and library and that a 2020 renovation returned the property to educational use for nontraditional middle- and high-school programs. The proclamation also stated the Lemon Street School is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
An alumnus who spoke during the recognition shared personal memories of dating and community life tied to the school and thanked the council for the acknowledgment. Council members praised the alumni and the restoration efforts and presented the proclamation to attendees.
Council did not take action beyond issuing the recognition; no new policy, funding or formal directive related to the site was proposed at the meeting.
