Uxbridge Select Board approves veterans IMA, appoints 300th-committee liaison and signs off on safety and donations

The Uxbridge Select Board on May 27 approved several routine but consequential items: a regional veterans-services intermunicipal agreement, the appointment of a liaison to the town’s 300th Anniversary Committee, a traffic-safety change, and a charitable donation to the police department.

Kyle, representing local veterans services, said the renewed agreement continues the prior arrangement shared among five towns (Millbury, Northbridge, Sutton, Douglas and Uxbridge). "Each town pays chapter 115 for their clients...Uxbridge just pays the 34% of the costs of the office," Kyle said, describing shared staffing and payroll arrangements. The board voted 3-0 to approve the intermunicipal agreement.

The Select Board discussed the newly formed 300th Anniversary Committee’s charge and subcommittees for parade, banquet, publications and fundraising. Committee vice-chair Mike Petaski described subcommittees already working and raised questions about whether subcommittees can expend funds directly; the board and manager clarified the warrant and accounting process and agreed that a "friends" group or 501(c)(3) could accept donations and make prepaid expenditures when needed. The board appointed John Wise as liaison to the 300th Anniversary Committee.

On public-safety business, the board accepted the Public Safety Committee recommendation to add a stop sign at Chapin Street and Blackstone Street to address a three-way intersection with heavy traffic; the motion passed 3-0. The board also voted to accept a $1,000 donation from Maureen Chabania to the Uxbridge Police Department and approved minutes for March meetings before adjourning.

The Select Board deferred a final decision on an entertainment license application for A Touch of Magic at 195 South Main Street until its June 9 meeting after health and permitting questions — including food-vendor permits and porta-potty logistics — were raised by staff.
