Fallon County commissioners opt to fence on county side after pipeline markings halt boundary installation

Commissioners discussed options: move the fence slightly west onto city property (a short distance) or move it substantially east onto county property to avoid the pipeline angle, which could require shifting the fence 30–40 feet. Commissioners agreed the simplest course was to locate the new fence entirely on county property where possible. "But we could definitely put the fence in and stay completely off city property, and it'll still be a good fence," a county representative said.
The county’s plan includes installing a cattle guard at a corner and tying a new fence into the existing north–south fence near the dam. County staff said they had located stakes marking the corner and that a survey was available. Commissioners also urged staff to coordinate with the city on the 10-acre parcel adjoining county land; multiple speakers noted the city must decide whether it wants its portion fenced or left open for grazing.
The commission emphasized the project’s immediate goals: keep livestock out of sensitive areas around the Upper Lake and reduce public off‑road vehicle access. County staff will proceed to install fence segments on county property and communicate with the city and Denbury (a private lessee mentioned during the discussion) about whether additional fencing or a cattle guard on city property is desired.
Next steps: county crews will install the fence segment on county land; the county indicated it will provide city officials with the stake/survey information and the option for the city to contract for any additional fencing on city property if the city chooses to do so.
