Senate Education Committee advances several bills in executive action
Summary
In executive action the committee adopted an amendment and passed SB138 as amended, and passed SB159, SB177 and SB182; the committee tabled SB181 pending amendment work.
After hearings the Senate Education Committee moved to executive action and processed several bills.
Senator Novak offered an amendment to SB138 to tighten language on temporary classroom removals and special‑education alignment, and to remove a reference to employee agreements. The committee adopted that amendment and passed SB138 as amended on a roll‑call vote (committee reported passage following correction of the tally).
Vice Chair Temple moved SB159 (a coal‑trust subtrust to increase education tax credits) and the committee passed the bill on roll call. The committee also passed SB177, which authorizes the Community Choice School Commission to seek public grants, after discussion about federal and private funding. SB181 (Indian education revisions) was the subject of a substitute motion to table and the committee voted to table the bill; senators noted tabling does not permanently kill a bill and it can be taken off the table later. Finally the committee passed SB182 (language preservation program clarifications) and adjourned for the day.
