Kennesaw police report rise in several August crime categories; chief urges context

Kennesaw — A police representative presented the city's August public-safety data at the Sept. work session, saying several categories rose for the month while some year-to-date totals remain lower than last year.
The chief said drug and narcotic offenses increased by 15 in August but are down 11 for the year. The department also reported increases in intimidation incidents, larceny and theft and vandalism compared with the same period last year. Dispatch handled 791 calls in August, and officers initiated 1,741 calls — an increase of 364 year-over-year, the chief said. The department recorded 91 arrests in August, an increase of 18 compared with the same month last year.
When asked to define "intimidation," the chief said the category covers nonphysical threats or conduct that create fear but do not rise to physical assault. The presentation also noted upticks in traffic contacts, warnings, crashes and hit-and-run reports for the month.
The data were described as highlights; the chief did not provide full, itemized tables in the public presentation. Council members asked clarifying questions about classification and whether individual complaints tied to infrastructure or enforcement would be addressed in follow-up reports. The chief said the department will continue monitoring trends and providing updates to the council.
The council took no formal action on the crime statistics during the work session.
