Commission approves two paving contracts and $24 million bond appropriation for roads, arena and jail projects

Macon‑Bibb commissioners on Oct. 21 authorized two independent contractor agreements for asphalt paving and resurfacing and approved a bond appropriation ordinance to fund roads, the jail expansion and renovation, arena architectural work and several public safety projects.

The first paving contract is with Professional Paving Services LLC for $2,326,332.54 to be paid from 2025 bond funds; the chair noted bidders met bonding requirements and GDOT rules. Commissioner Wynne asked whether Professional Paving is a local firm and the chair replied the company is local and has completed county work.

A second contract, with Atlanta Paving and Concrete Construction for $1,820,314.72, was similarly approved after discussion about coordinating repaving with sidewalks and the county’s Complete Streets process. Commissioners asked that sidewalk needs be considered when repaving occurs, and the chair said general maintenance repaving differs from road redesigns that would follow the Complete Streets review.

Separately the board approved an ordinance appropriating $24,000,754.03 from 2025 bond proceeds to begin paying for the projects previously budgeted, including road paving, the jail project, arena architectural work and public safety items (the chair said exhibits in the meeting package itemize allocations). Commissioner Bronson requested a clearer project list to ensure investment in East and South Macon neighborhoods; the chair said an exhibit in the back of the package provides itemized allocations and that the county will provide more concrete timelines in future briefings.

All motions carried by voice vote and were sent to the consent agenda for formal ratification.
