Houston County commissioners approve zoning exceptions, HVAC, road change order and election spending; one special exception tabled

At its regular meeting, the Houston County Board of Commissioners approved a package of zoning, capital and personnel items and tabled one special‑exception application pending additional study.
The board voted to approve special exceptions recommended by the Houston County Board of Zoning Appeals: Hines (application 2874), Thompson (2875), Lancaster (2876), Matthews (2878), Hartley (2879), Hoffman (2880), Guest (2881) and Banks (2882). Commissioners tabled Blake (application 2873) so staff can obtain a traffic study; the rehearing was scheduled for Oct. 27 at the Houston County annex.
The board approved a $29,950 quote from Hamlin Air Conditioning & Sheet Metal Inc. (Macon) to replace two PIU boxes serving the Superior Court HVAC; the project is funded from the 2018 SPLOST with an estimated 12‑week completion. Commissioners also approved Change Order No.1 for the Davidson Road paving project with Reeves Construction Company for $34,696.58, bringing the contract total to $1,127,941.89 and extending the contract by 30 days.
On personnel and operations, the commission approved hiring Casey Piper as a deputy clerk in magistrate court (grade 14, step C, effective Oct. 13, 2025), authorized hiring poll workers and purchasing equipment for a November municipal special election totaling $14,941.50, and awarded a $36,677 bench‑replacement bid to DCI Manufacturing for Superior Courtroom No.1 (public buildings funds). The board also voted to pay bills totaling $4,475,857.12.
All motions described above were moved, seconded and carried unanimously during the meeting.
