Dunedin proclaims Fire Prevention Week and names Michael Bowls firefighter of the year

Jeff Gao read a proclamation recognizing October 2025 as Florida City Week, encouraging civic education and volunteerism. The commission then noted Fire Prevention Week; Chief (Dunedin Fire Rescue) highlighted the National Fire Protection Association's theme "Charge Into Safety: Lithium-ion batteries in your home," outlined devices and behaviors that increase risk, and urged residents to use certified batteries, charge devices on hard surfaces and recycle batteries through approved collection sites.
The commission presented the 2025 Firefighter of the Year award to Michael Bowls. Chief remarks and staff highlighted Bowls's service history (joined 04/12/2023 via the lateral-hiring policy), prior experience with Hernando and Pasco County fire agencies, participation in USAR (Florida Task Force 425), HAZMAT qualification, training contributions, large-animal rescue capability and role as a shift union representative. Commissioners and the city manager offered congratulations and noted the lateral hiring policy's success in attracting experienced personnel.
The proclamations and recognition drew applause and photo opportunities with the commission and the fire department.
