Auburn Hills council approves minutes and consent items; discusses 2026 meeting schedule after election-mail concern

The Auburn Hills City Council on Oct. 6, 2025, unanimously approved workshop and regular meeting minutes from Sept. 22 and cleared most items on the consent agenda, while a resident’s complaint about a mailed election notice prompted brief public comment and a separate council discussion about the 2026 meeting calendar.
The meeting opened at 7 p.m. and a quorum was confirmed. Councilmember Knight moved to approve the Sept. 22 workshop minutes "with any amendments to corrections," a motion seconded by Mr. Ferguson and approved unanimously. A separate motion to approve the regular Sept. 22 minutes, moved by Knight and seconded by Dr. Fletcher, likewise passed unanimously.
During the public-comment time, David Sanders identified himself and said he had "received in the mail today, something concerning some of the council members" that referenced "something about the marijuana disbursement of rights." He asked that accused council members be given a chance to respond. The mayor said the material appeared to be election literature and that the meeting was not the forum for that discussion, but offered that councilmembers could speak with Sanders after the meeting.
On the consent agenda, the council approved routine items including board and commission minutes, the Fieldstone Golf Club cart-path paving and drainage improvements, and an amendment to the 2025 major street fund and the general street improvement department. Councilmember Knight successfully requested that the proposed 2026 city council meeting schedule (item 7B) be removed from the consent agenda for separate discussion; the remaining consent items were approved in a single vote.
During the separate discussion of item 7B, Knight argued for a consistent second-and-fourth-Monday schedule, saying, "I think if they're all second and fourth, we can easily schedule our vacations" and noting concern about meetings falling on or near holidays such as Martin Luther King Day. Clerk Pierce advised that "the city council rules of procedure, states that the council meetings will be held the first and the third," and that a formal change would require amending those rules; the clerk added the council could bring the change back at a future meeting if it desired. The city attorney (unnamed) said changing the schedule was not a legal problem.
No vote to amend the rules or adopt a new 2026 schedule was recorded during the meeting. The clerk said the council could place a rule-change item on a future agenda for formal consideration.
