Tucker engineers recommend two roundabouts to ease congestion and improve safety on Idlewood corridor

City engineering staff presented concept designs for two roundabouts intended to improve safety and traffic flow on key north–south collectors between Lawrenceville Highway and LaVista Road. The proposed locations are Idlewood at Fellowship and Idlewood at Sar Parkway; both involve right‑of‑way adjustments and some easements.

The engineer cited national data showing roundabouts reduce fatalities at at‑grade intersections, and explained design considerations including raised crosswalks, pedestrian refuge islands and accommodations for buses, trucks and emergency vehicles. Staff said the design is intended to calm speeds and reduce severe crash types such as angle and head‑on collisions.

Timetable: staff plans to advertise the project for 30 days and expects to return with bid evaluations and contract award recommendations in January or February after a pre‑bid meeting. Council asked about illuminated pedestrian crossings and public education; the engineer said the project will be well signed, lit and come with public‑education materials linking to the project website.

The presentation emphasized the project as part of a broader North–South connectivity study that prioritized operational and safety improvements across collector roads.
