Committee approves SJ36 to study standardization of prosecution in dependency and neglect cases

Senator Lehi framed the study as a response to uneven county resources and representation in dependency and neglect matters. Nikki Grossberg testified in favor, saying consistent representation could improve outcomes and allow the system to adopt consistent training and procedures.
Committee members asked whether DOJ special prosecutors might be assigned to counties with limited capacity; Grossberg said the Department of Justice’s child protection unit already assists in counties with constrained resources and that an expanded, standardized approach could be helpful. The committee approved SJ36 by voice vote and discussed volunteering a carrier for the interim study.
